Bamboo textiles

Lovely and soft like silk

Many people have already fallen in love with soft bamboo textiles, which are naturally both a sustainable and environmentally friendly material. The textile fibres from the bamboo plant have a naturally smooth, rounded surface, which makes them feel extremely soft and comfortable against the skin.

Moisture absorbing – effectively wicks away water and sweat 

Bamboo viscose textiles are, like the bamboo plant itself, highly effective at absorbing water. The plant can absorb up to 300% of its own weight. This property means that bamboo textiles are far better at transporting moisture and perspiration away from the body than, for example, cotton.

Antibacterial – a natural property of the bamboo plant

The fabric is resistant to bacteria and odour from perspiration, which means it can be washed at lower temperatures (around 30°C) and does not need to be washed as often. The strength of the bamboo fibres decreases when they become wet, which is why we always recommend air-drying rather than using a tumble dryer. Together with less frequent washing at low temperatures, this results in minimal energy consumption and therefore a reduced impact on the environment.

Biodegradable

Bamboo fibres are also classified as regenerated cellulose fibres. They are 100% biodegradable in nature, just like the bamboo plant itself.

Bamboo plants absorb five times more carbon dioxide and produce 35% more oxygen than an equivalent number of trees, thereby supporting the fight against global warming. The plant requires very little water to grow and can be cultivated entirely without fertilisers and pesticides. This is due to the bamboo plant’s effective natural defence against bacteria and fungal attack – a property that also benefits the finished product.

Green transition

The plant improves soil health by releasing excess nitrogen, while its extensive root system helps stabilise riverbanks and prevent soil erosion and run-off. When bamboo is harvested, it sends up new shoots by itself, all of which contributes positively to the green transition.

Moso bamboo

“Bamboo” is a collective term for woody or tree-like grasses from tropical or subtropical regions. There are well over a thousand different species, divided into around eighty genera. In textile production, it is typically moso giant bamboo – which mainly grows in northern China or other parts of Asia – that is used. This bamboo species is not among the approximately 25 species on the panda’s menu and therefore has no impact on the wellbeing of this popular bear.

From tree to thread

The process

The bamboo viscose used in our textiles is produced by extracting bamboo pulp from the core of the plant. The raw pulp is then converted into bamboo cellulose using traditional methods, as has been done since the technique was invented in the early 1900s. Finally, the regenerated cellulose fibres are spun into a yarn that can be woven into, for example, duvet casings or bed linen.

Our factories use high-tech, modern machinery in production, and all products are OEKO-TEX certified and comply with class 1 requirements, which is the strictest of the four classes. This is your guarantee that there are no residues of pesticides, heavy metals or other harmful chemicals in the finished product.
